Five years ago on the 31st August I wrote a blog ‘There are two football grounds in Rotherham’ and finished up saying nothing will change anytime soon. Well five years later it has.
Then Rotherham’s old Millmoor stadium still stood across the road to the New York stadium where the Millers had finally made a permanent home after a few nomadic years.
In 2008 after periodic financial crises administrators confirmed that they and prospective buyers could not maintain the agreements they had with the owners of their Millmoor Stadium. The ground was owned by the Booth family who it was reported wanted in the region of ÂŁ200 000 pounds a year for a fully maintained, by the club, lease and perks, mainly tickets.
Everything changed near the end of 2025 with the death of Ken Booth, the owner of CF Booth.
The C F Booth companies fell into administration in January and March this year with local recycling, waste and demolition competitor Ron Hull Jnr stepping in.
Having heard that the old stadium was being demolished I popped along to see for myself.
One happy outcome of the demolition is that the Hull family have returned the Derek Dalton clock, which oversaw the Railway End in memory of the super fan. It had stayed at Millmoor as a memorial but is now at the New York Stadium awaiting repairs and a decision as to where it will be displayed.
Let’s hope that the clearance of the old ground and the return of the clock will boost Rotherham’s fortunes which have not been too hot in recent seasons.
